#12 COS Interviews! How Cherry Capital Communications Connects Rural Michigan and Tribal Communities
About Cherry Capital Communications
In northern Michigan’s underserved rural areas, Cherry Capital Communicationshas made it their mission to bridge the digital divide. Founded in 2000 as an ISP, the company focuses on delivering broadband to rural and remote communities often overlooked by traditional providers. By embracing an open-access network model, that allowed smaller WISPs to transition to fiber, they enable them to use their infrastructure, expanding connectivity while fostering collaboration.
"Open Access was the way to go as a means of giving back to a community."
Collaborating with Tribal Communities
Cherry Capital’s partnership with the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians exemplifies their commitment to inclusivity. The tribe received federal ReConnect funding to build 100 miles of fiber infrastructure in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Cherry Capitalwas chosen as a partner for their exceptional expertise and their strong alignment with the cultural values of the tribe. Tim emphasizes the importance of trust-building, noting that mutual understanding has been key to overcoming challenges and ensuring alignment with the tribe’s goals of enhancing housing, healthcare, and education through broadband.
“This isn’t just about infrastructure,” Maylone said. “It’s about building relationships and creating a model that works for everyone.”
